TanzWerkstatt Berlin (TWB) is committed to supporting and presenting current work in international dance, including interdisciplinary work in the areas of dance and performance that displays a conscious openness to influences from other media and/or experiments with new forms. In other words, it is interested in artists who do not regard dance as an isolated, clearly defined "genre", but as a way of coming to terms with contemporary reality, an art whose means of expression are based on the human body and on movement. In addition to co-productions and guest performances, a major focus of TWB's work lies in process-oriented projects and in fostering international artistic exchange.

A major part of TanzWerkstatt Berlin's activities center on the annual three-week-long festival Tanz im August - Internationales Tanzfest Berlin (co-produced with Hebbel am Ufer), which features guest performances of various formats presented at ten different venues in Berlin, in addition to discussion forums, so-called "interventions," and workshops for dance professionals. TanzWerkstatt's activities include producing and presenting a wide range of work and events, devising concepts for discussion series and conducting residency programs.

TanzWerkstatt Berlin is a partner of the TanzRaumBerlin network. It co-presents the biannual German dance platform and co-organizes the EU project LOOPING, a French-Portuguese-German collaboration in which a total of twelve young European choreographers will be sponsored in 2009 and 2010.
